According to individuals familiar with the situation, the CBI is planning an appeal against the Bombay high court’s ruling declaring the detention of former ICICI bank CEO Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar “illegal” and their subsequent release in a loan fraud case.
According to insiders, the CBI is concerned that the Kochhars would tamper with the evidence after their release and will likely file a complaint with the Supreme Court. The HC order is currently being studied by its legal/prosecution team.
According to a source, the probe necessitates bringing the Kochhars and Videocon owner Venugopal Dhoot face-to-face to verify certain aspects. “However, our numerous attempts to put them one-on-one failed on countless occasions, necessitating arrests. One or both people remained missing “the insider explained.
Dhoot was arrested on December 26, 2022, and is currently being held in judicial custody. The CBI presumably summoned the trio for questioning on December 19, and the summons was served on December 15. None of them allegedly showed up. “They were summoned again on December 22, but this time only Dhoot showed up, while the couple remained away. They were requested to join the probe again on December 23, but only the Koch hars showed up, while Dhoot remained absent “the insider went on to say.
The CBI maintained that even after this, they continued to refuse to cooperate with the investigation, remaining evasive and hostile in their responses. However, the agency is said to have obtained vital inputs and information during the post-arrest confrontation.
“The information gathered will be reflected in our investigation report, which will be submitted to the court for trial,” according to another source.
The Bombay High Court has given the CBI until Friday to file an appeal with the Supreme Court in response to Dhoot’s petition.

They are charged in a case of quid pro quo for loans given to Videocon by ICICI bank, which allegedly resulted in the bank losing over Rs 1,700 crore.
The CBI, represented by counsel Kuldeep Patil, requested a week, but the HC panel of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan extended the deadline until Friday. On December 26, Dhoot, 72, was arrested. He requested an urgent hearing through his lawyer, Sandeep Ladda, alleging he has “99%” heart blockage. He is requesting that his arrest be declared illegal, his remand be lifted, and he be released.
